Everton 1 Luton Town 2

What a day. It began at Luton bus station shortly before 9am, and ended in a similar location just before Match of the Day kicked off. What a shame the BBC didn't recall Garth Crooks to the pundit sofa for one night only to reflect on his ridiculous comments made a few weeks ago. 3,000 Luton fans who were up on Merseyside know that this Hatters side are going to hold their own in the Premier League.  A dash from the bus just after 3pm meant we missed the first few minutes but by the time we were standing in the Bullens Upper Luton were well on top. A succession of corners delivered expertly by Alfie Doughty gave the Toffees warning. At the third time of asking Carlton rose like a colossus to thunder a header on to the bar via a Pickford flick. As the ball came rocketing down, Ashley Young must have imagined he was back at the Watford training ground and thought it was time for a shimmy. He had reckoned without Tommy Tommy Lockyer who charged forward and the ball crashed into the ne...

Luton 1 Wolves 1

We've got a point. Stop the clocks, and all the silly pundits who were talking about Luton losing all 38 games or going down by Christmas (Crooks). Five games in, and demonstrable improvements game by game, saw The Hatters deserve to take all three points, in a game they dominated from start to finish. But one defensive lapse cost us the victory, in a league where mistakes cost more than anywhere else. Sir Robbie made two changes from the Fulham game, with Chieo in for his first start, and Alfie Doughty recalled on the left. That partnership ran rings around a poor Wolves side all day long. Chong and Andersen dropped to the bench. Tough on Mads given his performances but Rob does like the left sideness of Bell at centre back, and unless you're going to drop the captain, the selection made sense. The little known Josh Smith took charge of this game, one of the newly promoted referees. And he was in the centre of the action. Edwards took to the field in his now trademark knitwear...

Fulham 1 Town 0

Massive improvement. A change of system. Should have come away with at least a point. Some shocking refereeing. Another dismal day for VAR. Over a minute eulogy on Match of the Day to Palhinha who wanted to go to Bayern. Yes, a good player, but somehow the ref completely missed a potential career ending tackle, not even a yellow card. Where is the consistency? Sir Robbie Edwards made 4 changes as Brown got a first Premier start. As did new signing Sambi Lokonga. Tommy Lockyer and Kabore also returned to the XI. It was definite tactical change of approach from the gaffer with Morris through the middle, and Chong and Brown providing support in attack, reverting to a much more solid base when wirhout the ball. So to the match incidents involving the Hatters. And there were plenty. On 5 minutes Lokonga sent Chong away, he raced down the flank but had no support but still made the keeper work. On 25 minutes Morris had a fantastic chance as the ball fell to him unmarked but his first-time vo...

Luton Town 1 West Ham 2

A Friday night like no other under the bright, bright lights at the Kenny packed with just under 10,000 passionate Luton fans. The game may have been lost, we may have no points after three Premier League games, but sometimes you just have to look at the bigger picture   Into the action Those thoughts below. But first the action. Luton were straight into it and, rather like the first few minutes at both Brighton and Chelsea,  showed great determination and fight. One moment just before half time and a bit of quality - Paqueta given time outside the box to curl a ball into the far post, and Bowen stole in between Bell and Giles to head past Kaminski from two yards. Perhaps the keeper could have done better but the header was from such close range there was very little time to react. The Hammers second goal late in the second half came from a Ward Prowse corner that went high just beyond the near post and was met by a firm header from the cat kicker.  Into injury time and ...

Town 3 Gillingham 2

9,500 at the reborn Kenny to see the new stand, check whether the ground was ready for the Premier home debut against West Ham, and see the reserves hold off a spirited Gillingham in the EFL Cup. Robbie made 8 changes from the Chelsea starting XI and it didn't take long for one of those looking to get a start to make an impact. New signing Jacob Brown firing home in clinical fashion. We then saw one of the best set piece goals I can remember Luton scoring. A free kick miles out saw a 1-2 started and finished by Alfie Doughty who curled an unstoppable shot into the top left corner.  Gillingham came back into and scored with relative ease before another superb finish, this time from Cauley Woodrow, made it a comfortable close to the game until the Gills pulled another back. Some good saves despite a few long balls and long throws to deal with saw the Hatters into Round 2 and a long trip to Exeter. But we were there to see the ground improvements, and what a job the club have done to ...

Chelsea 3 Town 0

Another view from the prawn seats, and a Friday evening trip to the Bridge. Last time I was there as a student Chelsea had a temporary stand and were managed by Glen Hoddle. Now they've got a billionaire in charge, not the Russian but Todd Boehly, who has so far bought 27 players for a sum just shy of £900 million.  Two changes from Super Robbie included a welcome return at the back for Reece Burke, and a surprise start in midfield for ex-blue Ross Barkley. Andersen and Pelly dropped to the bench.  Town made a very tidy start. You could immediately see Barkley's top flight experience when inside two minutes he won a free kick just inside the Chelsea half simply be retaining possession of the ball when challenged. Chong then robbed the £100+ million pound Caicedo a few minutes later, burst forward, before smashing it well wide of the post. Another £100+ million player Enzo escaped a clear yellow for a nasty slap on Kabore, before the same Chelsea player missed a great ch...

Brighton 4 Luton Town 1

A massive day in Brighton yesterday, as the Hatters roared on by 3001 fans and a few extras in the prawn sandwich areas, scored their first ever goal in the Premier League. Yes, Brighton got a few more, but plenty of encouraging signs on the south coast. Five debutants in the Luton Town starting XI - the keeper Kaminski, plus Kabore, Giles, Andersen, and Chong. Bell, Morris and Elijah the only starting survivors of last year's opener at the Kenny against Birmingham at the end of July 2022. For over 30 minutes I thought we looked comfortable. So much so I took a photo of the scoreboard. Brighton had the first booking, and Chong made a great start in midfield, looking committed. Mitoma - later booked for kicking the ball into the crowd - looked a class act throughout the game, and it was his cross late in the first half that saw Bell caught slightly under the ball, and March headed in the opener. Typical Luton we came straight back and forced a corner. A great delivery saw Morris pow...
